MARCH 2018
129 Officers Killed in 2017

Names Strips 2018 Newsletter

This year, we will be adding the names of 360 fallen law enforcement officers—129 of which are the names of officers we lost in the line of duty last year. Two hundred and thirty-one are the names of officers who fell in years prior who are now being recognized.

On May 13, we will officially dedicate these names during the 30th Annual Candlelight Vigil. If you can’t make it to Washington, DC, to experience the Vigil in person, you can take part through the United By Light campaign. Register to watch the Vigil webcast with your friends and family and light a Virtual Candle in honor of a special officer.

New Report: Making It Safer

The primary purpose of Making it Safer: An Analysis of U.S. Law Enforcement Fatalities Between (2010-2016) is to provide an in-depth analysis of the types of calls for police service that resulted in a law enforcement fatality, identify any emerging patterns or trends and offer recommendations which will reduce future fatalities.

Spanning from 2010 to 2016, Making it Safer provides statistical and tactical data relating to the circumstances of these line-of-duty deaths. The researchers found that “Domestic Disturbance” calls continue to present the most danger to officers summoned to investigate complaints. Read the report.
